April Feature: Plants of the Qur’ān and All the Flowers Are for Me — two ground-breaking exhibitions at Kew Gardens
The Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art is a gallery that has been open since 2008 at Kew Gardens and is the world’s first display dedicated solely to Botanical Art. The gallery is currently showcasing, in tandem, two exhibitions titled ‘Plants of the Qur’ān’ and ‘All the Flowers Are for Me’ by renowned artists Sue Wickison and Anila Quayyum Agha respectively.
‘Plants of the Qur’ān’ brings together years of meticulous botanical study, pairing scientific precision with devotional care. Each painting documents a plant named in the Qur’ān, rendered in luminous watercolour.
‘All the Flowers Are for Me’ transforms the gallery into an immersive chamber of light and shadow, Agha’s laser-cut forms casting intricate floral patterns across the walls and floor.
Together the two shows make a quietly radical argument: that botanical art belongs not at the margins but at the very centre of contemporary practice.
